| 説明 | Redhill.This historic town was established in 1869 to service a good grain growing district. It was named Broughton as it is located on the Broughton River. The district was one of the first Agricultural regions declared under the 1869 Strangways Selection Act. The Broughton Agricultural Area covered the Redhill Koolunga districts along the Broughton River. All farmers needed access to a railway or at this time more usually a port. Broughton (Redhill) was some distance in land so in 1871 the government created a new port at Port Broughton from which they could ship out their grain. Although the official town name was Broughton the locals referred to the red clay hill south of the town and called it Redhill. Redhill is the oldest town in this area of the mid North and it pre dates Port Pirie etc. It was officially renamed Redhill in 1940. Not much happened in the town until 1874/75. The first hotel, a single storey building opened in 1874 but closed in 1899. The two storey Eureka Hotel which is still operating opened in 1878. The first post office opened in 1874 and the foundation stone of the first church, the Little Glory Wesleyan Methodist was built in 1874. The first general store opened its doors in 1874 and Torr’s butcher shop started trading in 1875. It is unused and dilapidated these days but still standing in the main street which is Bowman Street. The historic buildings from the river end are:The Eureka Hotel 1878.The old Council; chamber now the museum 1898.The first hotel 1874- single storey building on the corner.The original Post office 1874.The current general store/shop. 1900?The old general store 1874.The original bank 1874 with 1890s pediment and façade.Torr’s butcher shop 1875.On the next corner another general store with fine cast iron lacework grills and 1900 pediment etc. Elsewhere in the town is a fine Mallyon Anglican Church (now a residence) built in 1881; The 1874 and the 1877 Wesleyan Methodist churches now residences; the cairn to the 1876 built Catholic church demolished in 1986 and replaced with a modern church; and the Institute built in 1879; and the old disused steel bridge across the Broughton River erected in 1908 after the original wooden bridge of 1876 was washed away in a flood. The new broad gauge railway line direct from Adelaide to Port Pirie via Mallala, Bowmans near Balaklava, and Snowtown reached Redhill in 1925. It was designed to create a faster coastal route to Port Pirie, Port Augusta. But it did not reach Port Pirie until 1937, the same time as the standard gauge line reached Port Pirie from Port Augusta. The East West Express then did the journey from Adelaide to Port Pirie in four hours, with a 12 minute refreshment stop at Bowmans. At Pirie passengers changed trains to the Commonwealth Railways standard gauge trains to Port Augusta and beyond to Kalgoorlie. SA Railways operated passenger services twice daily to Redhill and the city of Port Pirie until around 1980. The Indian Pacific still passes through Redhill on its way to Perth once or twice a week as does the Ghan to Darwin. |
