説明 | This is the transmitter building of WHAS/840 AM, Kentucky's oldest radio station (dating from 1922) and also its largest in terms of coverage, reputation and ratings. With a signal that covers much of Kentucky, Indiana, Ohio and Illinois by day—and covers half the U.S. and much of Canada at night—WHAS is one of the original "clear channel" stations, meaning it had no interference at night from other stations on 840 AM.Also, while most AM stations are being sidelined in the ratings, or duplicate themselves with FM signals, WHAS persists atop the ratings in its home market. As Scott Fybush reports here, this building and its many-acre site has been here since 1938, and has many stories to tell, most of them dating from decades when a station like this required round-the-clock maintenance of the 50,000-watt transmitter and much else. These days the whole place has an abandoned look. But, as Scott says in his report, it still impresses. |
