説明 | Lisa McNee, BLMA bat researcher kneels on the ground to put together equipment next to a pole with a bat box. During the recent Bat Week 2021, BLM Wildlife Biologist Kate Yates participated in a unique and timely activity in Lakeview District – an Acoustic Bat Blitz! To better understand bats in the Lakeview District, Yates set up detectors at the BLM Lakeview District Office and the Warner Wetlands in late October. Her efforts were fruitful and detected at least seven different bat species.“Silver-haired bats, Mexican free-tailed bats, and – to a slightly lesser extent – hoary bats, were the species that exhibited the most activity during Bat Week here in Lake County,” Yates said. But why Blitz in late October? No, it wasn’t because of Halloween.“A bat blitz at this time of year is insightful because bats either migrate out of the area or are less active due to fall weather conditions affecting foraging opportunities,” Yates explained.“Recording during this period helps inform us of what species are still active or present in the area. Even in winter, bats will occasionally be active on warmer nights, but to what extent is still a question,” she said. |
