| 説明 | This is an amphibious bridging vehicle, also known as a bridging and ferrying rig. It travels on land as a 4x4 wheeled vehicle, then two aluminium pontoons are deployed along the length of the vehicle giving it buoyancy before it is driven into water. It is then used to transport other vehicles across water obstacles. This later variant also used inflatable bags to increase the weight it could carry. The M2 was built in Germany by either Eisenwerke Kaiserslautern (EWK) or Klockner-Humbolt-Deutz (KHD) and the M2B variant entered British Army service in 1969. They were upgraded to M2D status from 1980, allowing it to carry the Challenger MBT. From 1997 they were replaced in service by the M3.This example is part of the Royal Engineers Museum collection and is seen here with only the left-side pontoon deployed while carrying a Light-wheeled Tractor. It is currently on display in the No3 Covered Slip, known on site as ‘The Big Space’Chatham Historic DockyardChatham, Kent, UK27th July 2021 |
