| 説明 | A member of the family Comasteridae, this is a crinoid, a distant descendent of the fossil crinoids better known to me as a geologist. It is found on shallow water reefs in the western Pacific. The original image is here: commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Comatulidae_-_Comaster_sc...Photo and copyright held by Commons user Hectonichus, and I reused it under the terms of that license. Please credit Hectonichus for any reuse.I cropped and adjusted levels a bit. A striking little (I think) marine animal. I wasn't able to find dimensions of the critter. If a WestPac diver stops by and knows, please comment!Actually, this one was seen in the Indian Ocean. Illustrating the depths of my geographic ignorance: The Maldives Islands are located southwest of Sri Lanka and India, about 750 kilometres (470 miles; 400 nautical miles) from the South Asian continental mainland. |
