説明 | Built between 1925 and 1928 as part of the Tapoco Project (Tallassee Power Company), the Santeetlah Hydroelectric development, located in Graham County, North Carolina, impounds the Cheoah River downstream of Robbinsville. The dam is was built to provide power to the Aluminum smelting and rolling operations of the Alcoa company in Alcoa, Tennessee. A unique feature of the hydroelectric development is the location of the Power House being five miles distant from the dam and reservoir, standing along the banks of Cheoah Lake on the Little Tennessee River well away from the intake and reservoir, with pipes and tunnels carrying water from the intake to the powerhouse, in places running uphill, before reaching a standpipe at the top of the hill above the powerhouse, flowing into the turbines below. The Santeetlah Reservoir has an area of 2,881 acres (1,661 hectares), with a catchment area of 176 square miles (460 square kilometers), and has a normal full pool surface elevation of 1,941 feet (592 meters). The dam stands 212 feet (65 meters) tall and is 1,054 feet (321 meters) long, and was apparently one of the first structures to use vibratory damping to control the quality of concrete poured to construct it. The Classical Revival-style powerhouse, dam, and aqueduct were all listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2004, owing to their historical significance as a unique feat of engineering. The dam is presently jointly managed by the Brookfield Smoky Mountain Hydropower company and the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA). |
