| 説明 | A minor pre-war civil airfield during the 1930s, Hatston official opened in October 1939 as a Royal Naval airfield. It is famous for being the first airfield to have been constructed with hard runways (replacing earlier grass ones). Operational until 1948, the airfield was a landing base for carrier based aircraft from the fleet in nearby Scapa Flow. As well as four hard runways, the station was also equipped with a slipway to accommodate the many seaplanes stationed here. The site is now an industrial estate, and while many of the major features have since been demolished, there are sufficient tantalising clues to the areas previous and prestigious use. |
