説明 | Duckston soils are found in shallow depressions between coastal dunes and on nearly level flats between the dunes and the marshes. They are very deep and poorly drained. They have a sandy grayish brown surface layer and underlying material that is gray sand. These soils are commonly saturated at the surface layer to 0.5 foot during the year. Their water table is influenced by daily tides, and are subject to flooding and ponding following heavy rains and storm tides. Duckston soils formed in sandy sediments reworked by waves and wind. Duckston soils mainly support a coastal shrub plant community. The type of vegetation varies depending on the amount of exposure to salt spray. Saltmeadow cordgrass and waxmyrtle are in areas affected by salt spray. The areas at a greater distance from the ocean spray support less salt-tolerant grasses and sedges as well as greenbrier, eastern baccharis, black willow, red bay, three-square rush, cattail, sawgrass, blueberry, wild olive, and Virginia creeper.Photo by John A.
