説明Torrens Gorge and Kangaroo Creek reservoir. The original River Torrens weir beyond Athelstone was constructed between 1857 and 1860 and it remains as the point where water from Kangaroo Creek is piped down to Hope Valley reservoir. This historic aqueduct and cast iron pipe from the weir to Hope Valley Reservoir was built in 1872 as that reservoir opened in 1873. It was decommissioned in 2008 as now all water is piped to Hope Valley underground. The construction of the Gorge Road began in 1912 and was completed to the Gumeracha turn off at Cudlee Creek by 1924. Kangaroo Creek was a tributary of the River Torrens and plans were made to dam Kangaroo Creek in 1916 but it was not proceeded with. With the post-World War Two industrial expansion of Adelaide and the increasing population due to an influx of European migrants displaced by the war in the early 1950s and then an influx of skilled £10 English migrants in the 1960s the city needed new reservoirs. Kangaroo Creek reservoir was one of the answers to this. In 1969 the first reservoir on the River Torrens was commissioned with the 1966 works on the Kangaroo Creek reservoir completed. It and the 1979 Little Para reservoir were to provide water for the industry and population of the Salisbury- Elizabeth suburbs. The water from Kangaroo Creek was used to maintain levels in Hope Valley and Millbrook reservoirs and to join to the Elizabeth water mains. The current strengthening of the reservoir wall and widening of the spillway will improve the earthquake resistance of Kangaroo Creek but provide no extra water for Adelaide. During the construction of Kangaroo Creek reservoir three bridges were submerged including one quite close to the reservoir wall (Batchelor’s Bridge depicted), the town of Millbrook was destroyed and parts of the Gorge Road were realigned with two new bridges. A little later the town of Chain of Ponds was demolished.
