| 説明 | This was the first of the Somme memorials to be erected, it was inaugurated in 1921. It stands in the area where the 36th Ulster Division attacked on 1 July 1916. The German line in this area was known as the Schwaben Redoubt. The memorial is known as Helen's Tower and was copied from the original tower which was in the estate of the Marquis of Dufferin in Clandeboyne in County Down. The grounds of the estate were used as training grounds for the Ulster Division before coming to France. The Ulster attack in this area was initially very successful, however due to the failure of the divisional attacks on either side the Ulstermen were ultimately forced to relinquish their gains and retreat to their original starting line. |
