説明 | Great Western population 400.Like Stawell and Ararat this place began as a mining centre named not for wine but for high hopes of gold finds. That was in 1858. Concongella Creek runs through the town which was laid out in 1859. In the 1860s vineyards were established here. In 1870 one vigneron Joseph Best hired unemployed miners to carve out caves into the hillside for cellars. Best’s Concongella vineyard eventually was taken over by Seppelt from the Barossa Valley in 1918. By then the Best Western vineyard was known for its champagne and fermented wines. The cave tunnels here called the Drives are the largest in Australia and they mature excellent methode champenoise style wines. In the main street you can see the Great Western Hotel, the old general store built in 1861 with a late 19th century façade and the Mechanics Institute built in 1884. On the road into the town is a former red brick St Columban’s Catholic Church built in 1900. The hotel was established in 1867. It was rebuilt in the 1930s. It became the Great Western Hotel in the 1970s. |
