The North Fork flows past Ahsahka village on the farther shore. Here, the expedition cut off the foretop of their 38 horses and left them in care of the friendly Nez Perce. They then buried their saddles, part of their powder and balls under cover of night. They next day they embarked and began the 60 miles to Lewiston, thence on to the Pacific.Copyright 2021.
