説明Church of St. John the Baptist, Heather Leicestershire (pronounced Heether) Mentioned as Hadre in the 1086 Domesday Book , it has strong links to the Knights Hospitallers. Its first rector of 1220 simply named "Thomas" was replaced in 1221 by Richard Arundel the first of 4 Priors of the order when the church came under their patronage . The present church replaced in 1275 - 1380 their chapel / preceptory where men were recruited for service in the Holy Land, Rhodes, Cyprus and Malta (a good deal for younger landless sons who were given free armour, horses, food etc) . - the nave and south aisle survive from this period. It stands next to a 1720 Georgian manor house where can be found in the cellar up to 3 feet in height the stone remains of the foundations of this former preceptory The early 15c tower now has 6 bells, and was built the same time the nave was heightened with added clerestory windows to let in more light. On the chancel wall monument kneel Stephen Everard 1615, wife Jane Babington & their children www.flickr.com/gp/52219527@N00/1c410kA sketch by Malcoim in 1796 shows the building had a spire with a weather vane, a porch and a door leading to the chancel.Restoration took place In 1846-47 by H. I. Stevens of Derby, when the chancel was rebuilt, the north aisle added and the short recessed spire removed. The tower clock was installed by Messrs J & H Dronfield in memory of their parents. The hammer strikes the Tenor Bell on the hour and needs winding once a week. The graveyard once full of gravestones has been cleared. stjohnthebaptistchurchheather.weebly.com/uploads/1/1/0/1/...
