説明 | Model of 2-decker ship-of-the-line HSwMS Stockholm at the Swedish Maritime Museum, Stockholm, June 2010. She was a 3rd rate designed as a conventional sailing ship and construction began as that in 1832. However, the 1830's was a time of rapid development of the steam engine and construction was delayed whilst consideration was given to fitting the Stockholm with a steam engine. In 1852-54 the 68 gun 3rd Rate Carl XIV Johan, launched in 1924 as a pure sailing ship, was fitted with a 300 hp steam engine and screw. However, that ship turned out to be totally underpowered and a failure. It was decided that the 350 hp steam engine intended for the Stockholm would also be inadequate so an 800 hp engine was substituted. The Stockholm was finally launched in 1856 but it, too, was unsuccessful. The basic design of Swedish sailing warships with their shallow draught proved inherently unsuitable for conversion to steam power and no more conversions followed. The Stockholm was converted into a school ship in 1872 and then a gunnery training ship in 1879, reduced to an accommodation hulk in 1891 and broken up in 1922.The Stockholm measured 186ft x 50.5 ft x 23 ft and had a displacement of 2,846 tons. She was armed with 70 guns (originally 66) with 6x72 pdrs and 64x30 pdrs arranged as such: gun deck: 6x72 pdrs + 24x30 pdrs; upper deck 30x30 pdrs; spar deck 10x30 pdrs.. |
