説明 | Beaufort population 1,072. The first white pastoral run was taken up here in 1838. In 1854 the Fiery Creek gold diggings flourished and the town was laid out in 1858. It was named after Sir Francis Beaufort (1774-1857), a Rear Admiral in the British navy. In 1863 it became the administrate town of the Ripon Shire Council. A number of its historic buildings were erected then or in 1864 including the Mechanics Institute and the Courthouse and the government school. The town grew as a saw milling town and as a service centre for the wealthy pastoral estates surrounding it. The railway reached the town in 1874. Gold mining continued into the 1900s. The attractive band stand was built in 1903 by which time the town had around 1,000 residents. Behind it is the Mechanics Institute built in 1873 and the old Masonic Lodge (1906) and behind them are the Presbyterian Church (1908) and the old Courthouse built in 1864. At 1,300 feet in altitude it has a cool to mild climate and ideal for fine European trees. On the way to the town centre on our right we will see the former Primitive Methodist Church built in 1887. It is now a gallery and shop. |
