| 説明 | Built in 1888 by Franklin W. Smith, this Moorish Revival and Spanish Baroque Revival-style structure, originally known as the Casa Monica Hotel, was sold to Henry Flagler, proprietor of the adjacent Hotel Alcazar and Ponce de Leon Hotel, less than a year after its completion. Flagler renamed the hotel the Cordova Hotel, and operated it in conjunction with his two other hotels. In 1902, a skybridge was built over Cordova Street from the adjacent Hotel Alcazar, linking the two structures, and the Cordova Hotel became known as the Hotel Alcazar Annex, with the two structures operating as a single hotel. In 1932, the adjacent Hotel Alcazar was closed, and, in 1945, the skybridge was demolished. In 1962, the hotel was purchased by St. John’s County for usage as the St. John’s County Courthouse, and the structure was renovated, covering the exterior in stucco, removing the famous Sun Parlor from the interior, and adding a large entrance with Corinthian columns and Spanish Revival-style elements to the Cordova Street facade, removing a four-story Moorish Revival-style porch structure in the process. During the renovation, in 1964, the lobby was utilized as a holding area for police dogs, which were subsequently utilized against Civil Rights demonstrators in the city. Following the completion of renovations in 1968, the building was utilized as the county courthouse until 1997, when the building was purchased by Richard Kessler, with the building being extensively renovated, opening once again as a luxury hotel in 1999. The hotel today is one of the most prestigious in the state of Florida, offering luxury accommodations. The building is a contributing structure in the St. Augustine Town Plan Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1970. |
