説明This is a snapshot of the Prickly Pear Giant on the following day. The owner took a hack saw to the limbs that were on the pavement so people passing by would not have to walk in the street. The Phoenix valley did not have any rainfall for 110 days. 2020 was the hottest summer year on record. Then a wonderful rain fell in Gilbert AZ on November 10, 2020. We had .45 inches adding to the 5 inches that had accrued YTD. It should have been around 7 inches on that date. Maricopa County averages 10.2 inches a year. Our home in Albuquerque is in Bernalillo county New Mexico where the average rainfall is 13.4 inches per year. Albuquerque is also the home of Prickly Pear cacti, but not to the magnificent Saguaro cacti that abound in Arizona. On my daily walk to the mailbox I walk past this huge Prickly Pear cactus. Opuntia, commonly called prickly pear, is a genus in the cactus family, Cactaceae. The owner thinks it was planted in 2005. Apparently the water it consumed on November 10, 2020 was more than it could bear and it simply collapsed. It probably weighed over a ton.
