説明Church of St Mary the Virgin Flaxley Gloucestershire - Flaxley Abbey a Cistercian foundation presumably provided the original place of worship for the laity. In 1253 it sought a licence to hold services in a new chapel before the abbey gate. This was a small, low single-cell building with a wooden west bell turret said c 1708 to be dedicated to St. Laurence - www.flickr.com/gp/52219527@N00/1436W4 it was extended in 1727 at the expense of Mary Pope, the executrix of lady of the manor, wealthy widow & philanthropist, Catharina Boevey according to her wishes. . Having no pulpit this chapel was probably not that used by the parishioners after the 16c Dissolution. In the late 16c it was served by a curate who was paid by the owners of the abbey (£5 in 1603) A later curate had a stipend of £8, to which Catharina added £4 a yearThe present building replaced a plain church with a west tower and spire (later demolished) which had 130 seats, all appropriated for the tenants and household of lord of the manor Sir Martin Crawley-Boevey living in the family seat of Flaxley Abbey It was built by George Gilbert Scott in early 14c style, at the cost of William Gibbs d1875, brother in law of Sir Martin and was consecrated on September 16th 1856 The organ was enlarged in 1888 as a memorial to Gibbs's widow Matilda who died the previous year The church contains some old fittings from the earlier church and gate chapel, notably monuments to Abraham Clarke (1683), www.flickr.com/gp/52219527@N00/CG5Jh3 his cousin & heir William Boevey ( 1692) www.flickr.com/gp/52219527@N00/R1Jfv8 , William's widow Catharina Boevey (1727) www.flickr.com/gp/52219527@N00/HW5J9X and her Crawley Boevey heirs Also a bell cast by Abraham Rudhall in 1727 For 300 years the Boevey / Crawley Boevey family enjoyed much influence here, as well as providing rectors, until Flaxley Abbey was sold by Sir Lancelot Crawley Boevey in 1960 Picture with thanks - copyright www.wyedeantourism.co.uk/discover/about%20us/t-3637%7C/i-...
