説明 | Magnetite iron ore from the Precambrian of New Jersey, USA.Magnetite is Fe3O4, a moderately common iron oxide mineral and the # 2 iron ore mineral. It has a metallic luster, dark gray to black color and streak, a hardness of 6 on the Mohs Hardness Scale, has no cleavage, is moderately heavy for its size, and often forms octahedral crystals. Magnetite is readily identified - a magnet will stick to it, hence the name. The Precambrian magnetite sample seen here is from New Jersey's Dover Magnetite District, which has been extensively mined for the iron. The magnetite bodies in the district have a hydrothermal replacement origin (Sims, 1953).Locality: Hurd Mine, near Hurdtown, Jefferson Township, northern Morris County, Dover Magnetite District, northern New Jersey, USA----------------------------------Reference cited:Sims (1953) - Geology of the Dover Magnetite District, Morris County, New Jersey.
