Dingell, Jr. Conservation, Management, and Recreation Act of 2019, Elk Creek is a 7.3-mile long scenic river. Elk Creek and the land surrounding are currently under the jurisdiction of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, though the Dingell Act placed the administration of the wild and scenic river under the Bureau of Land Management. The creek meanders through a broad valley edged by sloping foothills. The designated segment includes the site of the now decommissioned and notched Elk Creek Dam. A trail, which is paved for much of its length, runs along Elk Creek and can be accessed from trailheads at the downstream and upstream end of the trail. Visitors to the area can enjoy the scenic beauty of the creek while hiking, biking, or horseback riding along the trail through a mix of grassland, riparian hardwoods, and conifers. Know Before You Go: •Access roads to Elk Creek are gated and open to the public only between May 1 and November 15. •Use caution when exploring along the creek. •Vault toilets are located at both trailheads. •Be aware of and respect private property in the area. •No overnight camping is allowed in the area and motorized vehicles are not permitted beyond the trailheads. •The incomplete dam structure and construction site are not authorized for public access and may include hazardous materials. Location: Elk Creek is about a 45-minute drive north of Medford, Oregon. Travel north on OR-62 for approximately 20 miles and then take a left on Elk Creek Road to reach both trailheads.
