説明 | Scenes during a bioluminescent harmful algal bloom seem at Yorktown Beach on Tuesday, Sept. 8, 2020. (Photo by Aileen Devlin | Virginia Sea Grant)Avoid swimming in areas with a visible bloom, where the water has an unusual color or smell, or where dead fish are observed. If you come in contact with a bloom, wash your skin thoroughly with fresh water. Some field staff have reported mild skin irritation, watery eyes, and runny nose from exposure to dense areas of the bloom. While A. Monilatum can be toxic to fish and shellfish at high levels, no published studies show that “Alex” is toxic to humans.Visit the Virginia Department of Health website for information on current blooms. You can also call their toll-free hotline for Harmful Algal Bloom information: (888) 238-6154. |
