説明 | This morning, I was walking towards Woodside as I was headed for the curiously named Doughboy Plaza and Park. Ever since I've heard of the place, I've been wanting to see it.So along my way I strolled through Sunnyside Gardens which is as bucolic as it sounds. I should have then made a left on Roosevelt Avenue but instead decided to leave Doughboy for another day and instead visited the nearby New Calvary Cemetery.I'm not a morbid person at all but here in New York I cannot resist cemeteries. It's guaranteed to be the only piece of land that you will have for yourself. This is most striking in Brooklyn when you compare Prospect Park (on a nice day always bustling with people) with Greenwood Cemetery which is in walking distance.Greenwood you will always have for yourself and even better, it's actually more beautiful.New Calvary Cemetery is very different. It feels much denser. It's vast and in the right spot you basically see tombstones rolling up and down the gentle hills all the way to the horizon. Also, the Brooklyn-Queens-Expressway on stilts goes right through it. I was there early, so the sun was still low. This presented a bit of a problem. I could either shoot towards the sun but that's pretty pointless with the Rolleicord. Its lens's flare-resistance is non-existent. Or I could shoot with the sun in the back but since it was so low, I was casting shadows 30 feet long.So that already limited the kind of shots I could take. There is actually not much you can do in a place like this due to the density of the gravestones. There is a very nice view onto midtown Manhattan a few miles away. It's huge and impressive but it would have required something longer than the 75mm wide-angle of the Rolleicord to get the perspective compressed a little.Anyway, because of and despite all the above, I had fun out there with the Rollei. I used Ilford FP4+ which I later developed in Ilfosol-3 (dilution B) for six minutes. I actually recall that this shot was at f/4 with a shutter-speed of 1/500sec. I remember it because I took a second one at f/8 and around 1/100sec but the increased depth-of-field didn't improve it. |
