Lower floor of the prison building, all the old cells of the building are rented by people who have yachts at the club.------------------------------------------------------------This information is on a plaque in front of the club house.Known in the 18th century as Cowie’s Island and then as Kavanagh’s Island, this island is now named Melville Island in honour of Henry Dundas, Viscount Melville, First Lord of the Admiralty 1804-06. It was used from 1797 for the accommodation of prisoners of war. In 1804 James Kavanagh conveyed it to the king. In 1808-09 the admiralty erected a prison and officers quarters here. It continued to be used as a place for prisoners of war during the Napoleonic Wars and the War of 1812. In 1815-16 refugee negroes from the southern United States were accommodated here. Later it was used as a hospital on occasion and as a barracks for recruits for the Forgeign Legion in 1855. In 1856 it was transferred to the War Department for detention barracks fifty years later it was transferred to the Dominion of Canada and additional buildings were erected upon it. In World War I, prisoners of war were kept here. It was leased by the Armdale Yacht Club in 1948. The hero of one of James Fenimore Cooper’s stories was a prisoner of war here in 1813-14. This island inspired one of Joseph Howe’s poems. |
