説明 | The model I made of a Hawker Fury II of 43 Squadron 'The Fighting Cocks' based at Tangmere and newly camouflaged at the time of the Munich Crisis, September 1938. Piloted by Sgt. Pilot Frank Carey, possibly the highest scoring RAF ace in WWII with 28 official victories and 22 unconfirmed because the relevant records were destroyed. The RAF had a series of outstanding biplane fighters in the 1930's: the Bristol Bulldog (in service 1929-37), the Hawker Fury (1931-39), the Gloster Gauntlet (1935-40) and Gloster Gladiator (1937-42). They had been finished in silver dope with colourful squadron insignia but all that was replaced with newly devised camouflage at the time of Munich when war was expected at any moment. Whatever the negatives of the policy of appeasement, it enabled Fighter Command - overwhelmingly equipped with biplanes in 1938 - to be largely re-equipped with Hurricanes and Spitfires by September 1939. Although withdrawn from RAF Fighter Command by then (but still used as trainers), the Fury continued in first line service with the Yugoslav Air Force until 1941 when they were wiped out by Bf 109's & 110's of the invading Germans. Furies were also still in service with the South African Air Force in 1940-41 when they saw action against the Italians in East Africa where they were used in ground attack duties and in air combat, shooting down two Caproni bombers. The Fury also fought with the Spanish Republican Air Force in the Spanish Civil War. |
