説明Lyndhurst.A pastoral station 35 kms east of the town site was taken out in 1858 and named after John Copley the first Baron of Lyndhurst. Around 1860 Sir Thomas Elder acquired Mount Lyndhurst station and eventually that passed to the Beltana Pastoral Company. In 1869 a copper mine, and later in the 1880s several silver and lead mines, began on Mount Lyndhurst station. They lasted into the 1890s and some gold was mined from 1899. The town was surveyed for the coming of the great northern railway to Farina in 1882 but it was not gazetted as a town until 1896 when town blocks were up for sale in June. The siding became an important point for wool carted down the Strzelecki Track from the Queensland border and from closer stations like Cordillo Downs (another Thomas Elder station) and Mount Lyndhurst. A general store was licensed to open in Lyndhurst in 1891 and it had a license to sell wine by 1893. The Lyndhurst Hotel was licensed from 1896. This original building burnt down following a gas explosion in 1988 and was replaced with current building. The government school opened in 1920 and closed in 1942. The hotel still trades and runs a caravan park. North of the town are some Aboriginal ochre (saprolite) pits mined for thousands of years by the local Aboriginal people. The quarries are 6 kms long and up to 2 kms wide and 30 metres high. The red ochre was highly prized and traded along routes into the gulf country of Queensland and elsewhere. East of the town towards Innamincka is Alf Talc sculptures. Carved by eccentric Dutch artist Cornelius Alferink. Lyndhurst has a population of 24 with 19 dwellings with a community centre, hotel, petrol station a few houses. There are several Muslim cameleer headstones in the Lyndhurst cemetery.
