説明 | Altar found at Ostia in the Portico of the Piazzale delle Corporazioni. The front depicts Mars (ancestor of Romulus and the Romans) with Venus (mother of Aeneas and the Julian family). The back depicts the she-wolf suckling Romulus and Remus, along with the personified river Tiber and two shepherds running away (probably Faustulus and his brother Faustinus). To the left is a personification of the Palatine hill as a shepherd, with an eagle hovering above the sacred grotto of the Lupercal. The sides of the altar are decorated with cupids playing with the chariot and weapons of Mars. It was dedicated to Mars and Venus in 124 AD, before being re-used as a pedestal for an image of Silvanus. The altar itself was probably made shortly before. Rome (inv. 324). |
