説明 | Sign at the entrance to the Thangka painting school in the Bhaktapur Durbar Square in Bhaktapur, Nepal. A Thangka, also spelt as Thangka, Tangka, Thanka, or Tanka, is a Tibetan Buddhist style of painting on cotton or silk appliqué, usually depicting a Buddhist deity, scene, or mandala. (a mandala is a Tubetan Buddhist concept to denote an imaginary palace that is contemplated during meditation). Thangkas are traditionally kept unframed and rolled up when not on display, mounted on a textile backing somewhat in the style of Chinese scroll paintings, with a further silk cover on the front. So treated, Thangkas can last a long time. The only caveat is that due to their delicate nature, Thangkas have to be kept in dry places where moisture will not affect the quality of the silk. Things are changing now of course, and are becoming a lot more commercial, and so replicas or copies of original Thangkas are sold, and then bough by tourists, framed and displayed in their homes. I have one hanging in my bedroom here in Pune (Poona) in Western India. (Bhaktapur Durbar Square, Nepal, Oct/ Nov 2019) |
