説明 | A far shot of the Golden Gate or Lu Dhowka- remember a similar one in Lalitpur/ Patan? (see Kathmandu album). I am in the Bhaktapur Durbar Square near the the Palace of the 55 windows adjoining which is this gate. The Golden Gate or Lu Dhowka is oneof the most richly moulded specimens of its kind in the world. The door is dominated by a figure of the Hindu goddess Kali looking down at all those who enter, and the Garuda bird (mythical griffin) and attended by two heavenly nymphs. Other embellishments of the Golden Gate/ Lu Dhowka are beautiful dragons and other mythical creatures in Hinduism, all turned out in marvellous detail. Percy Brown, an eminent English art critic and historian, described the Golden Gate as (quote) the most lovely piece of art in the whole Kingdom; it is placed like a jewel, flashing innumerable facets in the handsome setting of its surroundings. (unquote). The Golden Gate/ Lu Dhowka was erected by King Ranjit Malla and is the entrance to the main courtyard of the palace of fifty-five windows. The gate today serves as the entrance to the Taleji Bhavani temple. More on that in the next caption. (Bhaktapur Durbar Square, Nepal, Oct/ Nov 2019) |
