説明 | The entrance to the Mahendra Gupha (Cave) in Pokhra, Nepal, reminded me of the entrance to a sinster killing fields cave at Phnom Sampeu in Battambang, Cambodia, where the demented lunatics of the Khmer Rough had murdered scores of innocent civilians and chucked their bodies into a subterranean cave of this sort. Fortunately, none of that madness here. Mahendra Gupha (cave) was more rough and ready, and luckily, quite unlike it's bigger brother the Gupteshwar Mahadev cave elsewhere in Pokhara, is not as exasperating to visit as there is no sign of a temple here (yet). I had been really exasperated by the Gupteshwar visit due to scores of devotees constantly pouring in and out adding to the claustrophobia and bedlam in an already confined space, thanks to the locals having brought religion into it and sticking a temple into it. Mahendra Gupha (Cave) is mercifully a lot more peaceful. and is the large limestone cave. It is a rare example of a cave system in Nepal containing stalagmites and stalactites. The cave attracts thousands of tourists every year. A statue of Hindu lord Shiva can be found inside the cave- sadly, there is that religious angle again, but this little temple is relatively low key and in fact rather nondescript. I really wish India and Nepal would let natural phenomena remain natural and not drag religion into it and spoil it for everyone else with unnecessary religious fanfare and rituals.
