説明 | This is the three-tower WMCA/570 and WNYC/820 transmitter site—a familiar landmark along the east spur of the New Jersey Turnpike. I shot this series on approach to Newark Airport, while I was en route from Boston to Amsterdam. The towers were built for WMCA by Truscon in 1940, and are now (in 2020) the oldest original AM transmitting towers for New York stations in New Jersey, from which all of New York's AM stations, save three, are based.WMCA now shares the towers and transmitter building with WNYC/820, a station just as old, and with which it once shared time on a different channel when they were both transmitting from inside New YorkCityBoth WMCA and WNYC use the three towers to aim a broad signal across New York's boroughs. WMCA has just one pattern and is 5000 watts by day and night. WNYC has two patterns and is 10000 watts by day and 1000 watts by night. Both WMCA and WNYC were the first stations knocked off the air when flooded by Hurricane Sandy, about a year after these photos were taken. While the towers were high enough above the water, the transmitter building took about three feet of water and ruined the transmitters themselves. The catwalk to the towers was also destroyed and has since been replaced. |
