Al iniciarse la dieselización en España en los años cincuenta, se recurrió a los EE.UU., país cuya tecnología ferroviaria estaba en vanguardia, especialmente en lo referido a tracción diesel. Por ello la mayor parte de las locomotoras adquiridas en aquellos años eran de procedencia estadounidense. En España, estuvieron adscritas al depósito de Orense, circulando principalmente en Galicia y su periferia. Los motores diesel transforman la energía en movimiento, gracias a un motor de combustión interna. Este sistema proporciona una explotación flexible y barata gracias a su elevado aprovechamiento energético, muy superior al de la tracción vapor.
