説明 | This Grade I listed building in Corn Street, near the junction with Broad Street, was built in 1741–43. The architect was John Wood the Elder, who also designed The Circus in Bath. The Bristol Exchange was once used for corn and general trade transactions and, along the pavement in front of it, stood four flat-topped pedestals known as the Nails. Upon these the traders' deals were concluded – hence, some say, the expression "pay on the nail". The building is now used as offices and for St Nicholas Market, an institution which itself goes back about 200 years. The Nails are still in place. One of them can just be made out to the left of the large lamp-post in the centre of the photo. Another can be seen further to the left. Beyond the Exchange Building, on the left of the photo, is the tower of All Saints' Church. |
