| 説明 | The good lady who had promised to take my selfie once she was done with her group eventually took this picture of me though she composed it at an angle- something I would never do. Oh well. I am on the path from the bus stop to the main Todaiji (also spelt Todai-j) shrine in Nara, Japan. A bit now about the many free ranging Sika deer on the temple premises as well as in most of the town outside: Residents and visitors to Nara often hear the sound of a horn blowin. This actually marks the sound of the season, as this particular tone of horn is associated with the Deer Call, in which the deer are called and herded together by means of this horn sound. This tradition started in 1862 with the opening of the Nara deer park (which in effect is most of the town area outside of the Todaiji temple grounds), which is said to have been marked with the blowing of a horn. The practice has been passed on since then, and is now an event held several times a year at Tobihino, to the south of the road leading to Kasuga Taisha Shrine. With a sounding of the natural horn, the deer of Nara emerge from within the forest to cluster around the blower. It is said this is a sight than can only be seen in Nara.
