説明 Natimuk. The Vectis run of Captain Firebrace was taken out around 1844. Native Police were stationed on the run in 1845 to try and prevent white violence against Aboriginal people. Firebrace sold his leasehold in 1861 and the new owner Alexander Wilson had a fine red brick two storey homestead built in that year. Once the Victorian land selection acts were passed in the mid-1860s (similar to SA land acts after 1869) Wilson acquired much of his leasehold land as freehold land although that was not the intention of the land acts. Leasehold parts of Vectis run were acquired for closer settlement in 1884 in 1892 3,000 acres of the Vectis run was acquired along the Wimmera River to establish 80 fruit blocks at a new settlement called Quantong. But the large Vectis pastoral and grain property persisted. After the passing of a closer settlement act in 1904 more parts of Vectis were acquired for small farms. When the last lands of Vectis were subdivided for World War Two soldier settlers in 1948 the homestead was demolished. The village of Natimuk was surveyed in 1874 but no action was taken. A second survey was undertaken in 1875 and a store opened and a school with 170 pupils! The town grew quickly. By 1880 Natimuk was well established and it soon had the shire offices for the Shire of Arapiles. Newspapers noted that many of the settlers of Natimuk were of German decent and had arrived there from South Australia around 1887.They soon established a German school and a Lutheran church. During World War One the Victorian government banned German language in churches in 1914 and in schools in 1916. In 1927 Natimuk was the first to have electric street lights in the region. The first courthouse opened in 1883 but the still standing fine Courthouse was not built until 1891. The architect was Samuel Bindley who designed many Wimmera courthouses. The arrival of the railway from Horsham in 1890 was an important milestone in Natimuk’s development. Natimuk had a dairy factory from 1893 and two banks were operating in the town by then. From the early days Natimuk had an agricultural implement’s works and a flourmill from around 1875 which was built by a local German background family. The Beard and Sisson implements works was employing 105 people in Natimuk in 1894. The factory closed in 1910. In 1909 an institute opened in Natimuk which was later rebadged as a soldiers’ memorial hall. Today Natimuk is a quiet town surviving with commuters who work in Horsham but the main street has some fine old buildings. Entering the town from Horsham they are:•On the left the old wooden Carpenter Gothic style Catholic Church built in 1915. Now a residence. The first Catholic Church was built on this site in 1889. •On the right is the Presbyterian Church. Moved from Dooen in 1974. The first Presbyterian Church was built in 1877 on this same site. It became a Uniting Church in 1977 and the Catholic congregation now also use. •Directly opposite on the right is the Anglican Church. Built in Carpenter Gothic style in 1890 and still in use. •At the intersection on the right is the old Courthouse 1891. It is now the Natimuk Historical Society building with a collection of statues in front of it. The public toilets are located here too. •Next on the left the 1953 Masonic Lodge building. The original building was built in 1897.•Next on the left is the National Hotel. Built in 1887 and burn down and rebuilt in brick in 1892. •Next on left is the first general store built in 1875 in classical style. Note the pediment and large shop windows. •On the left is the grand two storey Colonial Bank built in 1888. It became an E. S & A Bank in 1918 and closed in 1930. Now a residence. •Almost next door on the left is the Natimuk Post Office with clock tower. It looks as if it was built in the late 1890s to 1900. •On the right across the road is the former single storey Natimuk Hotel built in 1884. The first hotel on the site was built in 1876 for Heinrich Sudholtz. It has been a residence for decades. •Next on the left is the imposing façade of the National Bank built in 1908. Look at the detail in the triangular pediment above the entrance doors. •Next on the left is the early institute hall built in 1909 and now marked as Soldiers’ Memorial Hall. Very classical in style with another triangular pediment above the doorway. •On the next corner on the left is an Art Deco style house called Rosel’s built for the publican of the National Hotel around 1910. •On the right is the modern (1963) St Paul’s Lutheran church. The first Lutheran church opened in Natimuk around 1874. There were two Lutheran Churches in Natimuk by 1903 and a Lutheran School which was closed in World War One in 1917. •Also on the right next is the former state school. The school began in 1875 but this building was erected a few years later around 1885. •A few kilometres outside the town we will see the stunning Mt Arapiles named by Capt. Thomas Mitchell in 1836 and a bit further on Mitre Peak. Mitre Peak is a sacred Aboriginal site surrounded by a reserve.
