説明 | Sheep Hills. This town was named after the Sheep Hill pastoral run which was broken up for farming in the 1870s. The farms were mainly taken up by Lutherans of German descent from South Australia. A Lutheran School opened in 1875 and a state school in 1877 which marked the beginnings of the town. But the town only grew after the railway from Minyip arrived in 1886. Few buildings are left in Sheep Hills except for the old Commercial Hotel (about 1884) and the wooden Mechanics Institute 1888 but in 1900 it had Anglican, Catholic, Methodist and Presbyterian churches. All are gone. The silo art here was produced by Melbourne artist Adnate who uses vibrant colours to paint some local Werigaia Aboriginals – Ron Marks and Regina Hood and two children Savannah Marks and Curtly McDonald. The starry sky above the figures appears like amazing hairstyles to some and detracts from the impression of the faces of the silo art. |
