| 説明 | Lobethal - Pastor Fritzsche’s town. The origins of Lobethal, meaning valley of praise goes back to the arrival of Pastor Fritzsche in SA in 1841. Shortly after arriving in SA he married and went to live in Hahndorf. Ferdinand Mueller who came out on the same ship with Fritzsche found the Lobethal area in 1842 when he was working as a shepherd for the SA Company on land it owned from a Special Survey. He advised 18 families to buy land there. 196 acres were acquired and divided between the 18 families. In 1843 the first school opened and the Zum Weinberg Christi church congregation began. Pastor Fritzsche also began to teach men to become pastors- thus establishing a Lutheran seminary. In 1845 the Lobethal College began and the Zum Weinberg Christi church or St John’s Lutheran was finished. It is the oldest Lutheran church in Australia but a new 1992 church is now used by the Lutheran congregation. But in 1846 a split emerged between pastors Fritzsche and Kavel and two Lutheran synods were formed in SA and two Lutheran churches and congregations in Lobethal. The emerging town was laid out in the medieval German “hufendorf” or strip village style and the houses erected were traditional German style with steep rooves, hipped end gables, and log uprights and pug infill or brick walls, usually referred to as half timbered houses. Most of the farmlets were less than five acres in size. (After the split with Fritzsche, Pastor Kavel went on to establish Bethany and Tanunda in the Barossa.) |
