説明 | After hearing for years how all of the buildings that George B. Dorr, considered by many to be the Father of Acadia National Park, had all been torn down by the Park Service, well, I believed what was being said, that is until one day I made a huge discovery. You see, all of his buildings had been torn down, all but one, which was named Storm Beach Cottage. As Mr. Dorr's health began to fail him he left his estate Old Farm, at Compass Harbor, and retreated to his beloved cottage to live out his final years. As far as structures go, the cottage is a beautiful example of what cottages looked like back in the day. it rests upon a hillside overlooking the Oldfarm Road, the driveway does a half circle around the cottage, with one end of the driveway being the second driveway along the Oldfarm Road, and the third driveway on the right being the other end of that half circle. If you are not from the area, compass Harbor is hard enough to find, locating Oldfarm Road is really hard. As your heading out of town along route 3, in the direction of Otter Creek, you will pass the Bar Harbor YMCA and town Ball Fields on your right, after that begin looking for a white mail box close to the road, #399, Compass Harbor parking lot, unmarked, is right across from that mail box, and Oldfarm Road is the next road on the left as you drive uphill. I will be posting a map on Storm Beach Cottage, if you do decide to check it out the Park Service has asked that you do so from a distance, as a family rents the cottage from the Park Service and they want their privacy respected, and to be honest, you get a great view of the cottage from the roadway. My photo was taken before i knew of the family living there. |
