| 説明 | Though the family had been at the farm in Saylorsburg since 1870, my mother and her brothers and sister actually grew up in a suburb of Philadelphia. I had an extra day, so I drove down to have a look at their little townhouse, which I last visited in 1974 when I was 12 years old, and to visit nearby Duke's Tavern, where my grandfather stopped for a boilermaker almost every day of his adult life. Duke's hasn't changed much, except for the LCD teevee screens above the bar. We met a number of people who had been going there for 50 or 60 years; and Joe the bartender, who started working there in the 1970s, said he remembered my grandfather after I described him. It's a great place; we don't have bars like that out here in the West.Apparently Duke's has recently been sold, after being in the same family since 1946. No word yet on whether the new owners plan to make any changes (later edit: they made one big change, renaming the bar to O'Connell's Tavern) |
