説明 | So we went barhopping in a couple of local joints. Sue us. It was the most fun I've had in a dark place with strobe lights, shiny floors and cheap drinks. Most of the songs the DJ put on I would never have danced to if I were back in Manila, but there is a special kind of strength and camaraderie imbued upon a group of out-of-towners whenever they encounter nostalgic anthems. Particularly in places with floor-to-ceiling mirrors. Provincial nightclubs called J1 and G5 in sleepy surfing towns are ahead of me in terms of world music. I love to play football but I could never, for the life of me, sit through an entire match; which is why I've never heard the FIFA World Cup song by Shakira, she of the gyrating hips that had mesmerized Rafael Nadal. It was like the 48-hour weekend in a pulchritude of drumbeat and fast feet: courage in the face of trying to sleep fully reclined on a bus with people who demand you don't do so, trying to catch a wave in the warmest sunshine one moment and then in cool drops of rain the next, savoring the sweetest homemade rice cakes surprisingly flavored only by the leaf it was wrapped in, fighting the good fight, and peace on the shores of your mind.Take the weekend off. You'll be a better person for it. |
