説明 | Mother leopard securing her kill in Central Serenegti (she had big struggle to carry this big Thomson's Gazelle, by the time she climbed up, she had whole game watching crowd cheering for her!), she had one cub and it was an experience to watch both of them along with kill on an iconic kopje setup, a dream sight!Leopards have the ideal physiology for tree climbing. They are lightweight compared to a lion; they are powerfully built in their shoulders and forelimbs, allowing them to pull themselves up steep tree trunks; they have a low center of gravity and incredibly high power-to-weight ratio; they have protractile claws allowing them to grip bark; their front limbs are free from attachment to the collarbone (joined only by ligament and muscle) which allows free movement; their mobile backbone allows them to twist and turn and balance themselves, twisting up to 180 degrees relative to the other half of their body; and their tails are long, slender and sturdy for keeping balance when climbing. These adaptations make the leopard the most successful climber of all the predators in whole big cat family. The scientists found that leopards tend to hoist prey that are between half and one-and-a-half times their own weight. Kills too small or too large were often eaten on the ground. The likelihood of hoisting also spiked if hyenas or other male leopards show up.Nevertheless, I got my my first wild sighting of leopard after roaming jungles for almost 14 long years! A memorable one though!! |
