説明 | Markah had the most extensive agricultural cultivation of all the villages we visited along the trek.AgricultureThe crop season lasts from April to September and cultivation is done in areas along streams and rivers only. The locals are known for their expertise in cutting irrigation channels (uras) even through hard granite, to channelize the summer snow-melt into the fields. They plant poplar or willow trees along the banks to protect these channels. The main cereal crops are barley and wheat. Besides cereal crops, fruits like apple (kushu) and apricot (chuli), are commonly grown while walnuts and grapes are found only in certain areas, particularly the Batalik region. As for green vegetables, they are grown in abundance around Leh. In fact, the roadside vegetable vendors in Leh market with their striking faces, vibrant jewelry and fresh colorful vegetables are a shutterbug's delight.Flora and Fauna. (2018).
