説明 | The Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) in partnership with the Malheur Soil and Water Conservation District, and the Owyhee Irrigation District, helped farmers in the Fletcher Gulch watershed convert from open-ditch, flood/furrow irrigation to closed-piped systems and on-farm center pivots. These irrigation upgrades resulted in significant improvements in water quality, supported by years of monitoring data. Other benefits include reduced labor and energy costs for farmers, and increased water quantity available during periods of prolonged drought. This project took nearly 20 years to plan and implement, and had funding support from the Oregon Watershed Enhancement Board and the Oregon Department of Agriculture. The Fletcher Gulch Water Quality project would not have been possible without the dedicated support from local farmers like Mike and Charlie Barlow, and their neighbors. The resulting water quality improvements have made a lasting impact to sustain local agriculture while conserving precious natural resources. Photo by Tracy Robillard, NRCS, September 2019. |
