説明Whitwarta. This district was settled after the Hundred of Balaklava was declared in 1856 and so named after an Aboriginal word meaning fresh water. This was a desirable location right on the banks of the Wakefield River and not too distant from Port Wakefield. Most of the sections in the Hundred were purchased by Edmund Bowman who bought 95 of the 112 sections! He established Werocata homestead and station further along the Wakefield River near Balaklava. The hotel on the northern banks opened in 1866 and in the 1870s and 1880s it was known as the “honeymoon” hotel for the elite of Balaklava and districts! It was not officially licensed until 1881. It closed in 1923. The school opened in Whitwarta in 1879 but was replaced with a fine new government school in 1911 which still remains as a residence. The school closed in 1951. The official town of Whitwarta was not created until 1879 as a private town when blocks were sold. The town post office opened in a house in 1876 (closing 1967) and a cemetery was opened by the government in 1881. Two pioneers who arrived on the Buffalo in 1836 are buried here. In its heyday Whitwarta even had its own Agricultural Bureau group and a blacksmith’s shop (operating from 1879-1903) but almost nothing remains of the town these days. The first bridge over the Wakefield River opened in 1874 but the current bridge over the Wakefield River opened in 1914. In the 1920s the Balaklava Council was concerned that some males of Whitwarta frequently bathed naked in the river whilst waving at passing women! The local Wesleyan Methodist Church was built in 1888 and closed in 1920 but all trace of it has disappeared.
