説明 | It's about 97 degrees outside today, and we really need rain. I dedicate this to all my friends in cooler climes!Come Rain, Come ShineFor weeks the surly, stifling air Grips us in its harsh embrace; The sky mutters madly to itself, But not a tear bathes its gritty face; And bursts of hot, galvanic rage Have made benighted fields a stage Where feckless fury and senseless soundResoundAnd echo round and round(Conducting nothing to dry ground)And shake us to our arid bones. The grim clouds growl in grumbling tonesAnd leave the doomed corn to die aloneThen travel east to piss and moanAnd pour their pails and tales Of liquid woeOn more receptive ears below. But now the sky’s close mood has passed,The clouds have come back home to play,And the lively rain has come at lastTo frolic in the fresh-washed day.It rolls in shining silver sheets; On the high-pitched roof, it drums and beats; It hops and skips; it skates and sails; And first it’s heads, and then it’s tailsAcross the shingles and the shuttersTo cascade from the waterspoutsAnd overrun the brimming gutters. The rain has come but will not stay,For it will not be banked Or held in place; It travels on its watery wayAnd flows away Without a trace. The hot sun will return apaceAnd steam the mists back into spaceTo feed the clouds Until again they burst,Returning their liquid graceTo earth.taken from Elementa (Loosey Goosey Press, 2008) by Faith Goble |
