説明 | Looking "uphill" to the second-top lock, where all appears calm.Other than the two sets of lock gates at Clachnaharry, which (first lock) admit vessels from the Beauly Firth, and then (second set of locks) lift the vessels up slightly to reach the Muirtown basin, this is the first set of locks which cause vessels to climb up (or down) substantially in order to reach the same water level as Loch Ness. Muirtown Basin, once boasted its own railway branch to accommodate passenger traffic for the (very long gone) steamers and latterly for coal/good traffic for the not so long-gone two distilleries which were demolisdhed to make way for a retail park. Now the basin has its own marina, bur was primarily built in order to stock-pile vessels waiting to exit through the sea-lock, or to 'park' or over-winter, or to climb the Muitown Locks en route for Loch Ness and the rest of the Caledonian Canal system. There are four locks (thus 5 pairs of lock gates) in the Muirtown Series and these are now electrically operated. In bygone years (1960s, when I were as lad!) the gates required to be opened and shut manually through brute strength, turning a capstan with large stout wooden poles. Many's the time this young lad (40-odd years ago) lent his little extra power to the efforts of the seamen and canal workers. It was therefore with some pride, and even more nostalgia, that I was able to tell (bore) my six-year old grandson about how the canal worked then and now, and how I found it very hard to believe it is 49 years since I first visited the canal, when my family and I - as a 7 year old boy - moved up to Inverness from East Central Scotland. The canal runs some 62 miles (100 km) from northeast to southwest. Only one third of the entire length is man-made, the rest being formed by Loch Dochfour, Loch Ness, Loch Oich, and Loch Lochy. These lochs are part of the Great Glen, a geological fault in the Earth's crust. There are 29 locks (including eight at Neptune's Staircase, Banavie), four aqueducts and 10 bridges in the course of the canal.en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caledonian_CanalThe Canal opened in 1822 |
