| 説明 | A rather grey day at Eilean Donan, a name often accorded just to the castle rather than the small island that it sits on - the name just means island of Donnan, a 7th century saint. There have been claims that there was a church here, but no physical evidence survives. Exactly who built the first fortifications here in the 13th century is not very clear, but it was certainly in the hands of the McKenzies for much of the five centuries before demolition by the Royal Navy in 1719. Virtually nothing recognisable remains that pre-dates a 'restoration' carried out between 1919 and 1932, the footbridge connecting the island to the mainland being from that period. This First World War field gun is one of a pair that flank the memorial to the soldiers of Clan McRae who died in that war. |
