説明In 2018, USAID launched the second-annual Digital Development Awards (the “Digis”) to recognize USAID projects that harness the power of digital tools and data-driven decision making. Jamii Africa was one of five winners chosen out of the 140 applicants. Jamii is supported in part by the Sustainable Financing Initiative, a PEPFAR-funded USAID-led initiative and Sustaining Health Outcomes through the Private Sector (SHOPS) Plus.In Tanzania, only 26 percent of people have health insurance. Others struggle to pay for the care they need.To solve this problem, the Jamii Africa platform allows customers to register and pay for low-cost private health insurance through their mobile phone. Clients have access to a network of health providers at no cost at the time of service. Administrative processes for enrollment, premium collection, and claim processing are digitized through Edgepoint Digital. Jamii was launched in partnership with Edgepoint Digital, a digital services intermediary, Vodacom, a leading mobile telecom company, and Jubilee Insurance Company.Using PEPFAR funding, the SHOPS Plus Project partnered with Jamii to implement community-based awareness campaigns to enroll people living with HIV into health insurance coverage. Together SHOPS Plus and Jamii has have helped over 6,400 people access health coverage and nearly 3,000 people have made health insurance claims through the platform. Jamii is building on this experience to develop and implement a strategy to scale up across Tanzania.Photos by Riaz Jahanpour for USAID Tanzania / Digital Development Communications
