説明 | Small faults in seismite horizon in the Mississippian of Ohio, USA.The small faults and the non-horizontal bedding here are not structural in origin. This is a roadcut in southern Ohio - bedrock in Ohio is almost exclusively ~horizontal sedimentary rocks. The tilted bedding is part of a seismite horizon. Seismites are intervals or horizons of soft-sediment deformation, within which bedding is disrupted, folded, and chaotic. Such horizons have also been called "flow rolls". The soft-sediment deformation was caused by ancient seismic events (earthquakes), during which sediments were disturbed, probably liquefied, and moved/flowed. Sediment liquefaction often accompanies significant earthquakes in modern times. The rocks are part of the Cowbell Member, a siltstone-dominated unit in a deltaic succession of Early Mississippian age called the Borden Formation.Stratigraphy: Cowbell Member, upper Borden Formation, Lower MississippianLocality: Portsmouth Bypass roadcut, west of Rose Hill & north of Thomas Hollow Road, northern Scioto County, southern Ohio, USA---------------------See info. on earthquake liquefaction:en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soil_liquefaction#Earthquake_liquef...andgeomaps.wr.usgs.gov/sfgeo/liquefaction/aboutliq.html |
