説明 | SENECA, Oregon - Cattle rancher Mat Carter is determined to maximize the health of his rangeland soils and is trying an innovative grazing strategy called day herding. This is a very high intensity, short duration form of grazing in which each unit is only grazed for one day out of the year! He runs the entire herd in one mob. This approach allows plenty of rest time for the range plants to recover. He has trained his herd to eat just about anything, even sage brush. He has done a few range plantings, mixing a variety of grasses to see what works best to provide the most ground cover during the right times of year. "A lot of things I do here are completely different from what other ranchers are doing,” Mat said. “I love to learn from people who are on the forefront of grazing innovation and try new things. I like to think outside of the box.”Mat hosted a group of natural resource professionals May 16 to learn how his management practices are building healthy soil. NRCS photo by Tracy Robillard. |
