説明 | SENECA, Oregon -- Jack Southworth hosted a group of natural resource professionals to learn how his management practices help him achieve his ultimate rangeland goal: A dense stand of healthy, productive perennial grasses with little or no bare ground between plants and some shrubs. The Southworth Family homesteaded on the property in 1885 and have a long history of farming in the Bear Valley. They face a tough challenge of only a 45 day growing season because of the high elevation and cold temperatures in Bear Valley. Jack is strategic with his range plantings and is trying different mixes of grass seeds to see what will give him the most ground cover. He uses a high-intensity, short duration grazing system. "We aim for a hoof print on every square foot," Jack said. The results have shown some highly-productive rangeland soils that are high in organic matter and have a desired "fluffy" texture.
